The Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon
📍 Truk Lagoon, Micronesia
Operation Hailstone (February 1944) was the American attack on Japan's primary naval base at Truk Lagoon in the Central Pacific. In two days, U.S. forces sank 12 warships, 32 merchant ships, and 275 aircraft — earning it the nickname 'Japan's Pearl Harbor.' The lagoon floor now holds over 60 shipwrecks, making it one of the world's top wreck diving sites. The sunken Fujikawa Maru, a seaplane tender, still has Zero fighters sitting in its hold. The Fuso Maru hospital ship was marked with Red Crosses but was carrying military cargo, so it was attacked.
