Lyudmila Pavlichenko — Deadliest Female Sniper in History

📍 Odessa / Sevastopol / Washington DC

Ukrainian sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko had 309 confirmed kills during the Siege of Odessa and the defense of Sevastopol — the most kills by a female sniper in history. She started the war as a university student studying history, and volunteered for the army immediately after the German invasion. She was wounded by a mortar in June 1942 on her 79th combat mission, and was pulled from the front by Stalin on the request of Eleanor Roosevelt. She became the first Soviet citizen to be received by a U.S. President at the White House. At a press conference in Chicago, asked how many enemy snipers she had killed while wearing makeup, she replied: 'I wear 85% clean military uniform when I go on combat duty.'
